From darkness to vision: Naomi Journey beyond cataracts

Naomi story

Naomi Rodrick Mkondya is an eleven-year-old pupil at Itepula Primary School, living with her parents in Itepula Igamba, Songwe Region. Her parents rely on small-scale farming for food and household income. Naomi was born with congenital bilateral cataracts, which significantly affected her vision and academic performance. She experienced difficulty reading the blackboard, sensitivity to sunlight, and inability to see distant objects. Early attempts to seek treatment at local clinics and Mbozi Mission Hospital were unsuccessful due to lack of specialists and advice to delay treatment. Following engagement with OSHI, Naomi was assessed and referred to Mbeya Zonal Referral Hospital for surgical intervention. On 23 December, OSHI facilitated her bilateral cataract surgery. The procedure was successful, and Naomi’s vision was restored. Post-surgery, Naomi demonstrated clear vision at both short and long distances. Her family expressed strong appreciation for the professional care provided by the medical team and the vital support from OSHI. The intervention has significantly improved Naomi’s quality of life and learning ability.
